Church in the Village

At the base of the volcanoes
in the national park, we visited a church in the village. Our journey included a 30 minute car
ride through a rural area. We then walked about 20 minutes
through the thick jungles that opened up to the shores of Lake Ruhondo. We were greeted there by a member of the church who was
going to take us in a wooden row boat across the glassy lake. It
was a peaceful 45 minute scenic voyage to the village.
Once on shore we faced another 30 minute hike up a steep hillside.
When we reached the church we were able
to rest and enjoy the worship service. The church was packed out with
villagers wanting to see the foreigners. Simon, our interpreter,
gave a powerful message that ended with an altar call and
several people coming to salvation.
We
then took the children (over 120) further up the hill to Pastor
Leonard's front yard where we held Sunday School (See picture).
There were only a few benches so most of the kids stood. Melissa
taught a short lesson. When it was Karalyn's turn to teach, God
had mercy on her by bringing rain that forced us into the tiny house.
Crowded in the tiny house, the kids amazed us by singing songs
we had taught them last summer at the VBS. We were blessed to see
the fruit from last summer's trip. After service ended, Pastor
Leonard and his wife invited us into their home for lunch. With
full bellies and
a five hour journey home still ahead of us, we headed back down
the hill to the lakeside. We were accompanied by masses of kids
who had skipped their lunch to wait for another opportunity to
be with us. They walked with us back down to the lake and stood on the shore waving goodbye as we rowed
away.
