An Update from Foundation

Abana B'umwami (FABU), Rwanda

Prayer request for April 2009

As the 15th Genocide Memorial period approaches, we would like to pray for the children and their families, especially those who were affected by the 1994 genocide against the Tutsis. We pray they continue staying in peace as this period usually reminds them of their deceased ones.  We would also like to pray for the general stability in the country especially during this period. Please pray with us.

EDUCATION:

Children in Secondary 1 (S1): This month, we visited some of the children who joined SI.  This year, almost all of them are doing well and are studying hard. Many of them however took several days to adjust to the life in boarding schools as almost all of them left their homes for the first time in their lives. We heard stories of how all of them have learned how to be more responsible for their property and adjust to their new school schedule..

CHILDREN'S HEALTH:

All sponsored children had their medical insurances for this year paid. This medical insurance that is commonly known as mutuelle de sante will enable them to access treatment at the government health centers from where the insurance was purchased. Children who fall sick and cannot be treated with mutuelle de sante are facilitated to receive further treatment at private clinics or hospitals.

Simon hands over the the card to one of the children.

CHILDREN'S FOOD:

We gave out food items to the poorest families this month. The food items included corn floor, rice and beans. As the food prices continue to rise, many families find it hard to push their food supplies through the period.

Eve Rukasa’s mother was among the food beneficiaries

Helen packed the food

SPECIAL PRAYER MEETING THIS MONTH:

We held a two-day prayer meeting with all staff and guardians who were able to turn up and we prayed for the children’s sponsors and other people across the world who are being affected by the current global economic crisis. We also prayed for children who no longer have sponsors that God can continue to provide alternative sponsorship and also for Him to provide to the guardians enough capacity for them to be able to provide all the support required by their children in future.

As a result of the women gaining more skills in making baskets, several types have been made but remain in stock. We prayed so that the church can be able to sustain the project and a wider market for what these ladies produce can be found.

SPONSORSHIP:

Almost all children are doing well and are studying hard. We have started having some of them prepare correspondences for this term as we wait for those who are in boarding schools to also prepare theirs when school breaks up on April 3rd.

Eli Itangishatse lost his mother this month. Eli and his siblings now remain to stay with their father who has not given up on his drinking habits. Liliane and other FABU staff visited the bereaved family shortly after burial and prayed for them. We also gave food items to this family during this period.

Plan for April 2009:

Complete correspondences preparation (letters, progress reports) for term one 2009 and mail them to sponsors.

If you're interested in getting involved with Abana B'umwami Children, please send an email to abc@calvarylahabra.org. You can sponsor a child for $30 a month, or more importantly, pray for the program and the children in it.
