Lima, Peru

Peru Update (October 4th, 2007)

After 13 hours of flying from Los Angeles to Lima, Peru, the team from Calvary Chapel Montebello drove two hours into the rustic town of Canete. This close-knit community is home to Pastor Jaime Inca, who was the liason and contact behind Calvary Chapel Relief (CCR) efforts in this particular region of Lima. Upon arriving to Canete, the team immediately began to work.

In line with the heart and vision of CCR, the group was able to come along side a local pastor to assist in facilitating needs of those affected by the crisis. With Pastor Jaime as the group’s guide, the team was able to transition directly into ministry work. Two hard-hit areas were the primary focus for the CCM team: Las Vinas and Playa de Hermosa.

Prior to the group’s arrival, Pastor Jaime and his church set up a food distribution center that distributes hot meals to the 120 families affected by the earthquake. The recipients vary from young children to sick elderly, but all are in need of nourishing meal and spiritual care. Pastor Jaime and the team from CCM provided more than just physical food—they provided soul food: bread of Life and Living water.

With warm food in their stomachs and hope in their hearts, the locals had the opportunity to pray and share struggles with the team. In turn, CCM encouraged and invited many to visit Koinania Canete for worship and bible study with Pastor Jaime. At the newly acquired church building, CCR had the blessing of donating Sunday school supplies, chairs for the congregation, and chairs for the children.

Though the location of the church is in great proximity to the city center, the building is still in need of fortification for safety purposes.

CCM hired individuals to make sure that the building will be ready for church services as soon as possible, but the church is still in need of lighting, a sound system, and microphones.

Before leaving Lima, the team from Calvary Chapel Montebello was proud to announce to Pastor Jaime that the congregation from CCM had joined together to buy him a car. For the first time in his life, Pastor Jaime will now have transportation to take him to additional colonias (regions) to start new food distribution centers.
